The basis of this Dictionary is Part VIII, the last section of the work, that comprises a history and description of the world's major diseases of yesterday and today in chapters organized alphabetically from "Acquired Immune Deficient Syndrome (AIDS)" to "Yellow Fever." The last section of CWHHD has been fully revised and the essays have been condensed into shorter entries, with up-to-date information on AIDS, Alzheimer's disease, Ebola, and Tuberculosis. The Dictionary also includes three chapters from other parts of the CWHHD on "Heart-Related Diseases," "Cancer," and "Genetic Disease". Nice book for young readers
Now that I have discovered the series of Eyewitness Books that I once purchased for my son when he was young (Can't believe he's beginning his senior year in college!), I enjoy going over them and reflecting on the value of this series for younger readers.
It is important that our youth understand the world around them--including a knowledge of science. This volume focuses on the volcano and earthquakes. Given the role--especially--of earthquakes in American history, this is a valuable volume.
The book begins with a basic point (Page 6): "Volcanoes and earthquakes are nature run wild." The first part of the work explores volcanoes. This includes the basics, including an examination of Vesuvius, what underlies the development of a volcano, volcanoes on other plants, and so on.
Then, a discussion of earthquakes. The basics: what they are, why they happen, what the consequences are.
All in all, a very nice introduction to these natural phenomena for younger readers (and parents might learn a whole bunch as well, just as I did).

To many people, the word “invention” brings to mind cleverly contrived gadgets and devices, such as safety pins, zippers, typewriters, and telephones—all of which have fascinating stories of invention behind them. However, the word actually has a much broader meaning, one that goes back to the Latin word invenire, for “to come upon.” In its broad sense, an invention can be any tangible device or contrivance, or even a process, that is brought into being by human imagination.
