Wireless Technician's Handbook

Here is an outstanding book that will bring you up to speed on wireless
communications technology in one easy read! Easy to read, yes, but thorough in
its coverage of the subject. This second edition of the Wireless Technician's
Handbook provides the basic fundamentals in radio frequency and digital
principles that you need to work in this field or to be knowledgeable about the
wireless industry in general.

You'll begin by delving into the many common concepts of radio frequency (RF)
and reviewing some commonly used digital modulation techniques. Next, author
Andrew Miceli reviews the history of cellular radio communications, discuss the
concept of cellular networks and multiple access techniques, and provides the
"big picture" of cellular communications. Then, you'll explore the advanced
mobile phone service (AMPS) system. Miceli next covers Interim Standard-136
(IS-136), essentially an enhanced version of IS-54. Miceli also provides an
introduction to Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM). Next, you'll work
through the technology evolution path for GSM and North American Time Division
Multiple Access (NA-TDMA); how wireless operators seem to go through General
Packet Radio Service (GPRS) and Enhanced Data for GSM Evolution (EDGE); and how
they're taking a direct path to Universal Mobile Telecommunications System
(UMTS). Miceli then gives a basic technical overview of the first generation of
the Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) format in order to facilitate the
understanding of how to test CDMA systems. A discussion of CDMA2000 (the next
generation of CDMA) as a backwards-compatible upgrade is then presented. In
addition, the author points out that it became clear, at the time of writing
this text, that Wideband Code Division Multiple Access (WCDMA), although
delayed, will be one of the three main voice formats for the foreseeable future,
along with CDMA2000 and GSM. Finally, you'll see that the rest of the book has
been designed to give the technician and technical manager a basic understanding
of many of the tools available to them. It also provides an overview of the
primary tests that are performed in the field for each technology discussed.

Today, in the fast-paced world of the telecommunications industry, it is up to
each one of you to take advantage of anything that will give you a leg up in
your grasp of wireless technology and how it works. This excellent book will
definitely give you that edge.
